Brief History

Way back in 1921, the need of establishing a school that would give adequate technical training along these lines was seriously felt.

In response to this need, the Mapúa was established in 1925 with less than seventy students enrolled in Architecture and Civil Engineering.

On March 8, 1929, after a thorough examination of the school curriculum and an ocular inspection of the school premises conducted by the Investigating Committee, duly appointed by the Secretary of Public Instruction, government recognition was granted for the full courses in Civil Engineering and Architecture.

In June 1931, Mapúa graduated the first batch of students with the degree Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. On the other hand, the date of the first graduation of students with the Degree Bachelor of Science in Environmental and Sanitary Engineering was held in February 1963. Since then, the School of CE-EnSE has been producing Board Topnotchers for both the Civil Engineering and Sanitary Engineering licensure examinations.

From the less than seventy students enrolled at Mapúa in Carriedo Street, where our Institute was born, to about three thousand students today, the School of CE-EnSE now has a permanent home in the Intramuros campus. From its humble beginnings, it has gradually gained pride to be considered as a source of well-trained Civil and Environmental and Sanitary Engineers, who have not only become famous, but have occupied top positions in the government as well as in private companies.

Mapúa Civil Engineering program, 1st PACUCOA Level IV Accredited Engineering Program in the Philippines

The Civil Engineering (CE) program of the Mapúa Institute of Technology has recently been granted Level IV Accredited Status by the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation (PACUCOA). The program was visited by PACUCOA Commissioners on January 30, 2009 and was evaluated using the six (6) outcomes-based criteria of Level IV Accreditation. The six criteria focused on Research, Instruction and Learning, Service, Linkages, Strategic Planning, and Career Planning and Development.

With the assistance of the Continuous Quality Improvement Office (CQIO) and the Institutional and Program-level Survey Executive Committee Chairpersons, the Dean, faculty members and non-teaching staff of the School of CE-EnSE prepared and compiled documents and records that exhibited the application of continuous quality improvement (CQI) on the processes adopted by the Institute. Exhibits were also presented to the PACUCOA Commissioners showing the various outputs per criterion vis-à-vis the desired outcomes. Moreover, tarpaulins showing process maps and the outputs and outcomes of each process were displayed in the Accreditation Room during the campus visit of the PACUCOA Commissioners. This has made possible the full appreciation by PACUCOA Commissioners of the outcomes-based education in the Institute as practiced by the CE program.

The Civil Engineering program of MAPÚA is the first PACUCOA Level IV accredited engineering program in the Philippines.
